Clinical Anesthesia of Patients with Varying Degrees of Hypothyroidism

Abstract

|
During the practice of clinical anesthesia, it is not uncommon to encounter patients with varying degrees of hypothyroidism, ranging from those who have been rendered essentially euthyroid by treatment to those with overt myxedema. As
hypothyroidism is
not always easily detected clinically, as there is extreme variance n the severity of the disease, clinical diagnosis of mild hypothyroidism can be difficult. But during anesthesia, hypothyroidism may be uncovered in these patients, and
abnormalities of
myocardial contractility and postanesthetic side effect-prolonged intubation time, electrolyte imbalance, bleeding complication etc.-are present in some patients with subclinical hypothyroidism.
